For gay and lesbian
youth, that’s a tall order.
Growing up is tough enough without
being different in a way that our society considers to be unacceptable
-
and in
a social environment that is uncaring, hostile, and often violent.
Young people do not choose to be gay. They know or sense they are different even before they understand the concept of attraction or sexual orientation. Some realize they respond differently to activities enjoyed by their peers of the same gender. Others realize that they do not fit the stereotypes promoted by their parents or the other adults around them. They discover that they are different.
They - and the greater family of the community - need our help to stay together.
Feeling valued is often difficult for gay,
lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered youth.
The message that they are wrong to
be different is conveyed early - and restated endlessly - as they grow up.
That’s devastating for the child - and it can destroy a family, the extended family of friends, and the greater family of community through alienation and some times devastating consequences.
WeAreFamily is SafeSpace.
Gay
youth are at least 5 times more likely to attempt suicide than heterosexual
youth as a result of the feelings of isolation and
alienation they experience.
The answer is understanding - not just among family members but in the greater community.
That’s what WeAreFamily
is all about. We
teach the community to value all of its members - gay or straight - through
awareness and education.
We help gay or lesbian youth find their places in the
world - and in their families and communities.
We fight homophobia,
the last acceptable prejudice, with love, education, persuasion and our
willingness to publicly address the issue
We are active on the local level in
South Carolina through direct services, and send our message nationally through
the Internet and direct mail.
