SafeSpace
SafeSpace is a weekly gathering of young GLBTQQI and affirming straight
people who get together to share their experiences, express their feelings,
and find encouragement among their peers. With two trained adult group
facilitators present at every SafeSpace gathering, the meeting is both safe
and structured. Meeting topics range from bullying to adopting healthy
coping skills to deal with stress.
SafeSpace is open to young
people, ages 16-23. Anyone under 16 years of age will need a parent's or
legal guardian's written consent to attend. Under the supervision of trained
adult facilitators, participants can feel safe to share the things that are
important in their lives, in an affirming environment. Community outreach
opportunities, social outings, and mentorship opportunities are some of the
additional programs we offer.
Why is SafeSpace Needed?
Growing up is tough enough without being different in a way that some people
in our society consider to be unacceptable. People do not choose to be gay,
yet many GLBTQQI youth often encounter bullying, hatred, ignorance,
judgment, and harassment because of their sexual orientation and/or gender
identity. As a result, they sometimes experience isolation, depression,
anxiety, and other intense feelings as a result of their emotional trials.
These feelings can be devastating for these young people. If not addressed
appropriately they can lead to destructive behaviors such as thoughts of
suicide, and internalized feelings of guilt.
SafeSpace exists
because, unfortunately, those to whom a child would normally turn for
support, family, friends, or religious community, may be unable or unwilling
to offer support. However, we have the resources, training, and experience
necessary to provide an atmosphere of complete acceptance and openness where
a young person can come and be him or herself.
