SafeSpace
SafeSpace provides a venue for GLBTQ youth 16-23 to relax and be themselves. If you are under 16 years of age, you will need your parent's or legal guardian's consent to attend. Under the supervision of at least two trained adult facilitators, they can talk about the things that are important in their lives, such as relationships, family, coming out, jobs, religion, and sex. Movies, game-night, trivia, and guest speakers are just some of the things offered every month.
Why is SafeSpace Needed?
Growing up is tough enough without being different in a way that many in our society consider to be unacceptable. People do not choose to be gay, yet many GLBTQ youth often encounter hatred, ignorance, judgment, and harassment because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. As a result, they sometimes experience depression, anxiety, and other intense feelings as a result of their emotional trials. These feelings can be devastating for these young people and can, if not addressed appropriately, lead to destructive behaviors and internalized feelings of guilt. SafeSpace exists because, unfortunately, those to whom a child would normally turn for support—family, friends, or religious community—may be unable or unwilling to offer support. However, we have the resources, training, and experience necessary to provide an atmosphere of complete acceptance and openness where a young person can come and be him or herself.
