What is "WeAreFamily?"
WeAreFamily is a local non-profit organization dedicated to providing counseling and support services for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered youth from 16 to 23 years of age.
WAF also provides counseling services for the families of our youth.
We are led by a Board of Directors composed of members of the local community. Our Board is a diverse group of varying ethnic background, age, gender, and affectional orientation. We represent a variety of denominations and religions, as well as secular humanism. We are united by our commitment to providing a loving, supportive environment in which young people can feel free to share their concerns as they deal with misinformation and prejudice in their daily lives.
We seek to become a more visible presence in the Charleston community. We need your help in reaching youth and families who could use our services.
WeAreFamily is the only support organization of its kind in the coastal area extending from Beaufort to Myrtle Beach.
We need your financial support to continue to provide our services. Our kids deserve the very best because they are the very best—highly motivated, courageous, and seeking to live their lives with integrity.
Recently one of our young people remarked, "This is a great thing here. This is a great place. I imagine I’d be dead if it wasn’t for WeAreFamily." We are here, and with your help, we will continue to be here!
For the sake of our kids . . .
Mission Statement
Our mission is to encourage straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and questioning members of our community to value one another through education.
We promote and distribute educational resources which inspire society to manifest our vision.
We work by all means available for the acceptance of gays and lesbians as full members of our society.
We focus primarily on the plight of gay and lesbian children, who often suffer the most because they have nowhere to turn for advice and support.
What does "We Are Family" offer?
We provide a weekly peer support group on Tuesdays for gay, lesbian and questioning youth called SafeSpace in the Charleston metropolitan area and an open door and telephone line every day for youth seeking advice or a friendly chat.
We sponsor a mentoring program that
matches youth from SafeSpace with responsible, caring adults who support
them in their life journey.
SafeSpace is currently meeting every Tuesday from 7:00pm-8:30pm at Circular Congregational Church at 150 Meeting Street. Topics of discussion vary weekly based on input from the youth attending. In the past, topics have included discussing the coming out process, dealing with discrimination, developing a circle of friends, the "do's and don'ts" of dating, peer pressure and other topics designed to help LGBTQ youth become contributing individuals in society.
