Who We Are
Founded over a decade We Are Family has been dedicated to providing support and resources for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (GLBTQ) youth ages 16-23 residing in Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley counties.
We are an all-volunteer, donation-supported organization run by a dedicated Board of Directors and sustained by willing volunteers from the Charleston area community. Our Board and volunteers represent a diverse group of volunteers, both gay and straight, from many different professions, age groups, genders, and faiths.
We provide support primarily through a program called SafeSpace, a weekly gathering of young GLBTQ people who get together to share their experiences, express their feelings, and talk about whatever is on their mind. With two trained adult group facilitators present at every SafeSpace gathering, the meeting is both safe and structured.
Ultimately, our goal is to help empower GLBTQ youth and to help them find their place in the world, in their families, and in their communities.
